Comic book performance 2021

Comics continue to slide off their early autumn highs with even the blue chips taking a bit of a hit.

Last week’s performance

Fractional secondary markets

No positive moves on the fractional markets last week, though it was pretty quiet overall.

All stats come from assets trading on the secondary markets at Otis, Collectable, and Rally

Auctions

ComicLink wrapped up their Focused Auction Session 1 with some instructive results. Generally speaking high blue chips continued to advance while low and mid blue chips were flat to slightly up / down. Comics one tier down were more mixed. We’ll know more about lower-tier books later this week (see This Week below).

The biggest winner was Tales of Suspense #39 (1st appearance of Ironman). The CGC 8.5 copy sold for $120k. That’s 2.5x the last sale in April 2021 and well above the fair market value.

A CGC 4.0 copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (1st Spiderman) finished at $62k. That’s the second-highest result ever for this copy, just below a sale from two weeks ago. A 3.5 graded copy sold for $40k, which is a tick up from recent results following the same pattern.

Continuing the blue chip trend, Fantastic Four #1 graded 6.5 sold for $40,111, which is also right in line with that issue’s march upward.

Other notable sales

  • X-Men #1 CGC 6.5 – Hammered at $38k against two recent sales of $57k
  • Tomb of Dracula #10 CGC 9.8 (1st Blade) – $38k against $48k – Identical copy on Otis @ $40k
  • Daredevil #1 CGC 9.0 – $31k against $29k
  • Marvel Spotlight #5 CGC 9.4 (1st Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider) $19,135 against $19,200
  • Special Marvel Edition #15 CGC 9.6 (1st Shang-Chi) $3k against $4k – 9.8 copy on Otis at $35k

FWIW, this was our commentary on the auction when it opened. All but Daredevil met or exceeded my expectations.

Amazing Fantasy (first Spiderman) #15 CGC 4.0 and CGC 3.5 – look for this key issue to top $50k and $40k, respectively, to bolster the trend of blue chips making moves upward. The CGC 4.0 copy is already at $52k.

Other issues to watch:

This Week

New IPOs

Silver Surfer #4 1969 CGC 9.8

  • Market Cap: $80k
  • Inferred Value: $125k
  • Offered: Rally 11/10/21
  • Recommendation: [Insiders Only]

Secondary markets

Nothing in the trading window this week, but these are our best picks of what’s available continuously on Otis.

At Auction

Comiclink finishes up its focussed auction this week and the next, but most of what’s left is second-tier and below. One interesting bit to watch will be the pair of TMNT #1 issues duking it out. A CGC 8.0 with white pages is currently outpacing an 8.5 graded copy by a healthy margin.
